For anyone who has had a meeting meander into monotony, help is just a click away. The Project Management Professionals (PMPs) at Cheetah Learning (http://www.CheetahLearning.com) are offering a new simple tool to help make meetings more efficient and effective. It’s called the “Making Meetings Matter” checklist.
As Capt. James T. Kirk of “Star Trek” once noted, “A meeting is an event where minutes are taken and hours wasted,” an appropriate response, given Kirk’s experience in the time-space continuum.
Thomas Kayser, an organizational expert who worked for Xerox, put it this way: “A meeting is an interaction where the unwilling, selected from the uninformed, led by the unsuitable, to discuss the unnecessary, are required to write a report about the unimportant.”
That’s where the newly developed “Making Meetings Matter” checklist offered by the Project Management Professionals (PMPs) at Cheetah Learning (http://www.CheetahLearning.com) comes in: It’s designed to help make meetings more efficient and effective, and it’s available at http://Blog.CheetahLearning.com/?p=778 as a free download.
A spot-check of observations culled from a variety of sources suggests that such a checklist is needed:
According to the International Conference on System Sciences, “Studies reveal that meetings are indeed costly and unproductive, yet essential and increasing in number and duration . . .”
Research conducted by Microsoft states that the average businessperson in the U.S. spends at about 5.5 hours in meetings each week.
Associated Professional Sleep Societies found that one in five people attending meetings admitted falling asleep. (USA Today pegged the number at 31 percent.)
OfficeTeam, a staffing service specialist, surveyed a cross-section of executives who said 28 percent of meetings were unnecessary.
No wonder meetings have earned a bad reputation – but help is on the way.
“As a project team, it is important to develop the guidelines on how you are going to hold meetings,” explains Cheetah Learning’s CEO and founder Michelle LaBrosse. “This greatly increases the productiveness of those meetings and reduces conflict.”
The “Making Meetings Matter” checklist is one of many Tips, Tools and Deals available this month as part of Cheetah’s “Reduce Workplace Conflict” theme that can be accessed by filling out the online form at http://www.CheetahLearning.com.
They include the PMP Exam Prep SmartStart Guide, PMP Practice Exam, 2 PDU Skills Assessment Course, and the Getting Started with PM Guide, along with “great deals” on Professional Development Units (PDUs).
Additional information is available at a variety of online locations, including http://www.CheetahLearning.com/press.asp#KHN – a compilation of “Know How Network” columns as well as at http://Twitter.com/MichelleCheetah. More in-depth material can be found in the books “Cheetah Project Management,” “Cheetah Know How,” and “Cheetah Negotiations,” which are available at http://www.CheetahStore.com.
But whether it’s blogs, books or related information, everything Cheetah provides is pragmatic and practical. That’s because LaBrosse, a single mother of two, took a hands-on approach founding the firm. She started it from scratch and grew it into a multi-million dollar powerhouse in the field of Project Management education, a competitive arena crowded with 1,600 providers registered with the Project Management Institute (PMI).
PMI eventually selected LaBrosse as one of the 25 Most Influential Women in Project in the World. Then, in 2008, PMI honored Cheetah Learning as Professional Development Provider of the Year for the significant contribution it made with its accelerated approach to teaching and doing project management.
