We all know how hard it is to find good help these days. To find somebody who’s a mini you is a golden moment. Everyone loves the idea of having a protégé or having somebody that can do things as well as you can. In a lot of cases, because you do things in a particular way or you’ve been doing a particular thing for a long time, it’s difficult to find someone who has the capability to do things the same way or as well as you.
I have been fortunate enough to be in this situation. I had a junior project manager working on one of my programs who turned out to have the makings of a fantastic project manager. This was their first time managing a project and they took it on whole heartedly, took on all the advice and guidance they were given and grew into a really great project manager.
If you do come across somebody who has that potential, don’t just let them slip by. Make sure you nurture that relationship and nurture their skills. Mentor them and help them grow because the worst thing to happen is wasted potential in a person. Ultimately, it’s in your best interest because you could end up with a really effective team member to help you.
